Market Winners & Losers: MBIA, Molson Coors

The major indexes ended the mid-week session with mixed numbers after a late-day selloff. The Dow closed up 0.3% and the S&P gained 0.1% while the Nasdaq fell 0.1%.

Here are Wednesday’s winners and losers:

Winners

MBIA Inc. (MBI)
The insurer’s shares jumped 7.5% after reporting quarterly earnings that beat the Street’s estimates. MBI shares last traded at $4.42, up 31 cents on the day.

DaVita Inc. (DVA)
The dialysis equipment manufacturer added 6.5% to its share price after an earnings beat. DVA shares closed at $57.93, a gain of $3.53 on the day.

Merck & Co. (MRK)
The pharmaceutical giant gained 6.4% as its deal with Schering-Plough closed and the company reiterated its positive financial target. Merck shares ended the session at $32.64, up $1.97 on the day.

Aetna Inc. (AET)
The health-care company’s stock moved higher by 5.2% Wednesday, with shares finishing at $28.01, a gain of $1.39 on the day.

Cigna Corp. (CI)
The insurer added 5.2% to its stock price ahead of the company’s earnings release Thursday. Cigna shares last traded at $29.78, up $1.47 on the day.

Losers

Molson Coors Brewing co. (TAP)
The beer manufacturer and distributor saw its shares plunge 8.5% on a drop in quarterly sales. Molson Coors shares closed at $45.18, down $4.22 on the day.

American International Group Inc. (AIG)
The insurer gave back much of Tuesday’s gains as shares fell 7.7%. AIG shares ended the session at $36.20, a loss of $3.02 on the day.

Genworth Financial Inc. (GNW)
The insurer sank 7.4% to close the session. GNW shares finished Wednesday at $10.07, down 80 cents on the day.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (GT)
The tire and rubber manufacturer continued its volatile trading pattern, with the stock dropping 6.1% Wednesday. GT shares last traded at $12.54, a loss of 82 cents on the day.

Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI)
Quarterly results pushed the oil drilling equipment manufacturer’s shares down 5.9%. BHI shares closed at $40.89, down $2.54 on the day.
