Cavuto: Candidates in an Olympic Race of Their Own

And on the eve of the Olympics...They rested.

Or at least Barack Obama did...or will.

He's going to take a break.

John McCain considering an Olympic pause.

It's the wind-down before the buildup.

Because here's the Deal:

Both these guys know we're all about to be an Olympics nation...Not a politics nation.

So they stand down, but not before we sum up.

Here's the race thus far:

A softening economy.

Hard but clear choices.

One trusts the government with a bigger role in making things right.

The other leery of same government because he doesn't think it can do anything right.

These warring philosophies dictate each candidate's policies, and our choice, this November.

Barack Obama sees the government helping to bring gas prices down.

John McCain favors free market forces doing the same thing.

Obama wants to raise taxes on the upper income to fund programs he says will boost the economy.

John McCain favors keeping tax rates where they are as we work through this economy.

Obama says we can't wait to work through a problem. Do something now.

Mccain says better to work through a problem before government makes things worse now.

That's pretty much as I see it.

And as they see it.

So there you go...This election, regardless of the issue, turns on whether the government is best suited to help solve that issue.

It's that simple.

Americans polled on this very subject seem of mixed minds.

They seek relief, but not too much relief...Demand Washington do something...But not sure what that "something" should be.

It's up to Obama to prove a greater government role is the answer if he wants to win.

It's up to Mccain to prove a rejection of that role is key if he wants to win.

So...more government or less government?

Keep the Bush tax cuts or eliminate some of the Bush tax cuts?

Jump ball.
